Michael Harren

Brooklyn-based composer and performer Michael Harren combines elements of classical composition with experimental electronics and storytelling to create hypnotic and boldly intimate work that walks the line between Laurie Anderson, Peter Gabriel and Dead Can Dance.

A vibrant, abstract digital illustration of a person walking towards an explosion of colors, symbolizing endless creative possibilities. The figure is silhouetted against a dynamic burst of blues, reds, yellows, and greens, creating a sense of motion and expansion. The vivid colors spread outwards, evoking inspiration, imagination, and the journey into the unknown. The overall mood is uplifting and emphasizes creativity and exploration.

Reframing AI in Creativity

December 3, 2024 by Michael Harren

Facing My First AI Experience My first experience with artificial intelligence was a little underwhelming. At my boyfriend’s suggestion, I downloaded ChatGPT, asked it a question so mundane I’ve since forgotten it, and promptly shrugged it off, wondering what all the fuss was about. My skepticism wasn’t unique. Creative Communities and Technology: A History of …

This weekend I will be a part of a panel discussion organized by New England Veg Fest and Compassion Arts: “The Arts for Animals.” Some of my favorite folks will be a part of the panel (three of whom you’ve heard on the podcast): poet and musician Donald Vincent, painter Jane O’Hara, pianist and author …

“Shut Up, Astoria” premieres this week!

December 1, 2020 by Michael Harren

I wrote the theme song and a ton of incidental music for a new sitcom called Shut Up, Astoria! It was created by a crew of people here in NYC that I have worked with a bunch in the past, and it was a tremendously fulfilling and fun project. Working on this pilot episode meant watching it more times …

New Video – Wake Up In New York

July 31, 2020 by Michael Harren

I recorded this cover of Craig Armstrong’s “Wake Up In New York” back in April of 2019 and somehow never managed to get it edited. It was a little bit of a challenge to myself to improvise on the piano and sing this simple, yet highly emotional song. It’s got some things I love and, …

New Life

July 25, 2020 by Michael Harren

It turns out that releasing music as an independent artist is even more challenging during a global pandemic. Who knew? The months of March and April were especially challenging here in New York City. March started out normally enough, mostly because none of us were paying close enough attention to the beginnings of this pandemic …

Reflections on the Booklyn AB/Z Fair

February 24, 2020 by Michael Harren

I spent this weekend at the Booklyn AB/Z Fair showing my books and zines along with my collaborator, friend, and publisher luke kurtis of bd-studios.com. I was excited to sell a few books and zines, but even more, the event helped me reconnect and (if you’ll pardon the potentially cheesy sentiment) reaffirm my artist-self.

Community + Service + Art

September 12, 2019 by Michael Harren

Last night was the second in my new regular series of shows at Judson Memorial Church, The Benevolent People’s Hour of Story and Song. It was an absolute blast! I am doing these shows quarterly now, in the very spot where I did my first performance of my solo work. It’s an absolute gift to …
